Sweep
Update is a program which automatically updates the installed version of Sophos
Sweep with the most current virus definitions supplied by Sophos. The program
has been successfully tested on Windows 98/98SE/ME and Windows 2000/XP. An update program for Sophos Sweep 3.x and 4.0x.
Sweep Update is currently not compatible with Sophos Sweep 5.0.0 - I do not yet know whether it will be compatible in the future.
Sweep
Update is a program which automatically updates the installed version of Sophos
Sweep with the most current virus definitions supplied by Sophos. The program
has been successfully tested on Windows 98/98SE/ME and Windows 2000/XP.
It is free, but you may not redistribute it in any form, I allow only the download from my pages.
After the installation, all you have to do is start the program and click on "Local update". Sweep Update will automatically detect the installed version of Sophos Sweep, download the right update from Sophos and install it into the program's folder.
If you use Sophos Sweep for Windows NT/2000/XP, the scanner will use the updated definitions after about 2 seconds, however users of Windows 98/ME will have to restart their machines, otherwise Sweep will continue with the old definitions.
I wrote this program in order to allow the convenient use of this scanner on single PCs which are only connected to the Internet via dial-up lines. Sophos PLC provides several tools which allow easy deployment and maintenance of Sweep in corporate LAN-environments, but they do not offer a simple one-click-updater like Norton Liveupdate or similar programs.
Sweep Update allows you to keep the installed scanner current on single PCs without LAN-access by automatically downloading and installing the correct and most current updates over the Internet right from www.sophos.com.
Sweep Update will not install the new engineupdates which Sophos provides monthly. The program itself is distributed on CD-Rom or downloadable with an account each customer gets along with his subscription; messing with this transfer would probably breach the license agreement.
Hard- and softwarerequirements:
- Windows NT/2K/XP or Windows 9x/ME (there was only limited testing for 9x/ME),
- Installed version of Sophos Sweep which is still covered by their 3-month-policy,
- about 1 MB of free HDD-space ;)
- Visual Basic 6.0-runtime (most computers have it already installed, and I
provide a link for the free download from MS)
